Characteristics and Applications of PET Tape

PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) tape is a milky white or light yellow highly crystalline polymer with a smooth and glossy surface. Its chemical name is polyethylene terephthalate glycol, known commonly as polyester resin.

Structure of PET Tape

PET tape is made from a soft PET polyester film as the base material, coated with high-performance pressure-sensitive adhesive on one or both sides. It is also known as PET high-temperature tape. PET tape has excellent peel strength, and its adhesive strength can be appropriately adjusted and customized based on the usage process. There are usually two types of adhesives used: acrylic adhesive and silicone adhesive, with silicone being more expensive than acrylic.

Characteristics of PET Tape

PET tape can be customized for its physical properties and color according to customer requirements. Available colors include red, transparent, yellow, black, dark green, grass green, etc. The adhesive strength can be categorized into ultra-high, high, medium, low, and ultra-low adhesion. Common thickness specifications range between 0.05-0.1MM. PET tape has good dimensional stability, thermal stability, chemical stability, excellent insulation, good conformability, initial tack, and holding power. PET tape can adapt to a wider temperature range and harsh environments. Acrylic adhesive PET products can withstand long-term temperatures of 100-120°C, with short-term resistance up to 140-150°C. Silicone adhesive PET products can withstand long-term temperatures of 140-150°C, with short-term resistance up to 180-200°C.

Applications of PET Tape

Based on the above characteristics, the primary industrial applications of PET tape include:

  • PCB/FPC circuit board industry, such as protecting gold fingers during gold plating, OSP, reinforcement, edge covering for chemical silver or gold plating, light shielding protection, aluminum substrate protection, chemical gold striping, screen printing mesh board fixing, and insulation fixing of electronic products.

  • Painting and coating industry, such as shielding during automotive, appliance, and machinery painting or coating.

  • Optoelectronics industry.

  • Other industries.

Factors Affecting the Normal Use of PET Tape

The type of adhered material

The molecular structure and surface roughness of different adherence materials vary, affecting the bonding effect of the product. The adhesive strength of PET tape products should be chosen based on the surface roughness of the adhered material.

Surface contaminants

Dust, oil, and moisture on the surface of the adhered material affect PET tape product bonding. Residual surface chemical solvents can attack the adhesive, breaking down its molecular structure and leaving residue on the adhered material, which can be cleaned with acetone or alcohol.

Adhesion pressure

The pressure applied during adhesion directly affects the bond tightness between the tape and the adhered material. Suitable pressure can be chosen based on different process requirements.

Adhesion temperature

Appropriate adhesion temperature should be chosen based on the adhered material and process requirements to avoid issues of residue or insufficient adhesion. Suitable temperatures can also improve the PET tape product's filling properties for surfaces with high and low points.

Usage environment

The presence of solvent-like liquids, fumes, or a humid environment with low temperature in the adhesion environment can affect the bonding effect of the tape. Suitable adhesion environments should be selected to ensure normal tape usage.

Other reasons

For instance, expired PET tape products, improper storage conditions, mismatched process parameters, etc.
